Akuma (known as Gouki in Japan) is a recurring playable character in the Street Fighter series. He made his first appearance as an extremely difficult optional superboss in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but his playable incarnations in the series have been drastically toned down since.

Akuma also has two alternate forms known as Shin Akuma and Oni.

Character Biography

Akuma is Gouken's younger brother and Ryu's adoptive uncle. Along with his brother, Akuma was one of two students of Goutetsu, who taught them both his style of lethal martial arts, including knowledge of the Satsui no Hadou and the Raging Demon technique. While Gouken disapproved of the violent nature of these arts, Akuma embraced them. When Akuma eventually left to train on his own, he eventually gave in to the dark side of the Satsui no Hadou, causing him to develop a lust for fighting powerful opponents to the death, unlike his master who was able to resist these temptations. He eventually returns to Goutetsu, believing him to have not fully embraced the true extent of the Satsui no Hadou, and kills him in a fight to the death. Years later, Akuma engages his brother in combat and performs the Raging Demon on him, believing him to be dead. After witnessing Gouken's student Ryu accidentally tap into the power of the Satsui no Hadou, Akuma becomes obsessed with trying to awaken the true power of the Satsui no Hadou within Ryu, hoping to fight him to the death at his fullest potential.
